List of Fleet Air Arm Honours and Awards and war medals
Victoria Cross Awarded
for most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or
self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the
enemy.
George Cross
For an act of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in
circumstances of extreme danger. Awarded primarily to civilians.
Companion of the Order of the Bath
Presented for service of the highest calibre for military service in WW II
and Korea.
Commander of the Order of the
British Empire For services to the war effort by civilians at
home and servicemen in support positions; mainly to reward non-combatant
services to the war and was to include women. Could be awarded for gallantry
as well as service.
Distinguished Service Order
For military officers only; rewarding individual instances of meritorious or
distinguished service in war. Normally given for service under fire or under
conditions equivalent to service in actual combat with the enemy.
Officer of the Order of the British Empire For services to the war effort by
civilians at home and servicemen in support positions; mainly to reward
non-combatant services to the war and was to include women. Could be awarded
for gallantry as well as service.
Member of the Order of the British Empire For services

Royal Red Cross Class1 For exceptional
devotion and competency in performance of actual nursing duties, or a
continuous or long period, or who has performed some very exceptional act of
bravery and devotion at her post of duty. Awarded only to fully trained
nurses.
Distinguished Service Cross
Awarded to naval personnel for the performance of meritorious or
distinguished services before the enemy.
Military Cross Awarded to commissioned
officers of the substantive rank of Captain or below or Warrant Officers for
distinguished and meritorious services in battle.
Distinguished Flying Cross
Awarded to officers and Warrant Officers for an act or acts of valour,
courage, or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations
against the enemy.
Air Force Cross
Awarded to officers and Warrant Officers for an act or acts of valour,
courage, or devotion to duty performed whilst flying, but not while in active
operations against the enemy.
Royal Red Cross Class 2 For exceptional
devotion and competency in performance of actual nursing duties, or a
continuous or long period, or who has performed some very exceptional act of
bravery and devotion at her post of duty. Awarded to fully trained nurses,
assistant nurses, probationers, or V.A.D. nursing members.
Distinguished Conduct Medal The
second highest award for gallantry in action, awarded for distinguished
conduct in the field.
Conspicuous Gallantry Medal
(Navy) Awarded for acts of pre-eminent bravery in action with
the enemy.
George Medal Awarded
only for acts of great bravery and was intended primarily for
civilians.
Distinguished Service Medal Awarded
to naval officers who show themselves to the fore in action, and set an
example of bravery and resource under fire, but without performing acts of
such pre-eminent bravery as would render them eligible to receive the
Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.
Military Medal
Awarded for individual or associated acts of bravery on the recommendation of
a Commander-in-Chief in the field.
Distinguished Flying Medal
Awarded to non-commissioned officers and men for an act or acts of valour,
courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations
against the enemy.
Air Force Medal Awarded
to non-commissioned officers and men for an act or acts of valour, courage or
devotion to duty performed whilst flying, though not in active operations
against the enemy.
British Empire Medal
Awarded for meritorious service which warranted such a mark of royal
appreciation.
1939-45 Star Awarded
for six months service on active operations for the Army and Navy and two
months for active air-crew service
Atlantic Star Awarded
for six months service afloat or 2 months for air-crew service, between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945 (Europe)
or 2 September 1945
(Pacific).
Air Crew Europe Star Awarded for two
months of operational flying from the UK
over Europe between 3 September 1939 and 5 June 1944.
Africa Star
Awarded for a minimum one day service in an operational area of North
Africa between 10 June
1940 and 12 May 1943.
Pacific Star
Awarded for one day or more of operational service in the Pacific between 8 December 1941 and 2 September 1945.
Burma Star
Awarded for one day or more of operational service during the Burma
campaign, between 11 December 1941
and 2 September 1945.
Italy Star Awarded
for one day operational service in Sicily
or Italy
between 11 June 1943 and 8 May 1945.
France And Germany
Star Awarded for one day or more of service in France,
Belgium, Holland
or Germany
between 6 June 1944
(D-Day) and 8 May 1945.
Defence Medal Usually
awarded to Canadians for six months service in Britain
between 3 September 1939
and 8 May 1945.
Canadian
Volunter Service Medal Granted to persons of any rank in the Naval,
Military or Air Forces of Canada who have voluntarily served on Acitve
Service.
Dieppe Bar The Dieppe Bar is awarded to
those who participated in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942.
Hong Kong Bar The Hong Kong Bar is
awarded to those involved in the Battle of Hong Kong during the period December 8-25, 1941.
Newfoundland
Volunteer Service Medal This medal was issued to those from Newfoundland
who served in the British Forces outside of Newfoundland.
War Medal (1939-45) Awarded
to all full-time personnel of the Armed Forces and Merchant Marines for
serving for 28 days between 3
September 1939 and 2
September 1945.
Mention
in Dispatches The insignia was awarded to Officers, Chief
Petty Officers, Petty Officers and men of the navy (or army or air force
personnel of equal rank) who rendered distinguishing service.
