MEMORIAL ROLL OF HONOUR

 

Plymouth Naval Memorial: Men of the Royal Australian Navy who lost their lives in the south-western Pacific region, and have no graves but the sea, are commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial in England, along with many of their comrades of the Royal Navy and of other Commonwealth Naval Forces.

IN HONOUR OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE NAVY, ARMY AND MERCHANT NAVY OF CANADA WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED HERE. THEIR GRAVES ARE UNKNOWN BUT THEIR MEMORY SHALL ENDURE.

BACON, Jack Cawston Lt Cdr (O) RN. Seagull V aircrew 9 Sqdn., RAAF, HMAS Sydney. Died 19 November 1941 [20 November 1941 in CWGC records] (Age 36). KIA in from HMAS Sydney when ship lost and sunk with all hands in an action against Japanese forces on 19 November 1941. Commemoration: PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom.

BARREY, Raymond Barker Flying Officer 407000 RAAF [CWGC/AWM verified][also listed incorrectly elsewhere as BARRY, S.R. an Army Pte]. Welland, South Australia. Seagull V aircrew 9 Sqdn. RAAF, HMAS Sydney.  Date of Death: 20 November 1941 (Age 25). At sea in Indian Ocean with RAN, when KIA from HMAS Sydney when ship lost and sunk with all hands in an action against Japanese forces on 19 November 1941. BERNIE, E.Walter Burford P/O 428901 RAAF. Origin. Petersham, New South Wales . Seagull V aircrew 9 Sqdn. RAAF. Died 25 October 1944 (Age 20).  Killed ashore by the Japanese after Walrus X9559 destroyed on the water near Karasau Island, New Guinea. Commemoration: LAE MEMORIAL, at the mouth of the Markham River on the Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea.

BROWN, Joseph Merrick Towers. Warrant Officer 418063 RAAF. Origin Malvern, Victoria. Seagull V aircrew 9 Sqdn. RAAF. Died 1 November 1944 (Age 21). Died of wounds after Walrus X9559 destroyed on the water by the Japanese near Karasau Island, New Guinea 25 October 1944. Commemoration: LAE MEMORIAL, at the mouth of the Markham River on the Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea.

BUNNET, C.K. Petty Officer Telegraphist 17469 RAN. Origin. Bondi, New South Wales, Australia. Seagull V aircrew 9 Sqdn. RAAF, H.M.A.S. Australia. Died 25 September 1940 (Age 29). KIA from Seagull V L2247, HMAS Australia during Operation Menace, shot down by three Vichy French Curtiss Hawk 75A's while bombardment spotting at Dakar, 2 crew seen to bale out astern of HMS Barham. Commemoration: PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom

GERRETT, Harrie Sinns. Lt Cdr (O) RAN. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Seagull V aircrew, 9 sqdn., RAAF.  Died: 21 October 1942 (Age 31). KIA from HMAS Australia only months after the ship's involvement in the US led landing at Guadalcanal, Coral Sea. Commemoration: PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom

GORDON, F.G. Lt(O) RAN. Origin: Farnham, Surrey. Died 23 February 1942 (Age 30). 817 Albacore squadron, HMS Victorious. Lost in one of three Albacores missing 30 miles east of Shetlands from HMS Victorious following night search in a snowstorm for the enemy fleet including the German battleship Tirpitz. McWHAE, J H Lt RN (P). Origin. Melbourne, Victoria.  Seagull V aircrew, 9 sqdn., RAAF, H.M.S. Devonshire. Died 8 February 1943 (Age 26). Seagull V A2-9 failed to return to ship after bombing instruction flight for RAAF pilots.

TOE, Ernest George Number: 40613 Leading Aircraftman [LAC]. Origin. McKinnon, Victoria, Australia. Seagull V aircrew, 9 sqdn., RAAF, HMAS Perth. Date of Death: 14 September 1944 (Age 24). Place of Death: Singapore area Cause of Death: One airmen of the six RAAF personnel of HMAS Perth who died after 1 March 1942 when the ship was sunk in the Sundra Strait. Died as Prisoner Of War . Most of the HMAS Perth survivers were captured and taken to Selarang Gaol and were later transferred to "Bicycle Camp" in Batavia.  Commemoration: SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore
