MEMORIAL ROLL OF HONOUR

 

 

PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom.: After the Second World War, the Plymouth Memorial commemorates sailors from all other parts of the Empire, other than Canada and New Zealand. There are over 15,000 names on the 1939-1945 extension to the memorial. The dedicatory inscription on the seaward side of the obelisk reads:
 

1914-1918 1939-1945 

IN HONOUR OF THE NAVY AND TO THE ABIDING  MEMORY OF THESE RANKS AND RATINGS OF THIS PORT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE AND HAVE NO OTHER GRAVE THAN THE SEA AND THEIR COMRADES OF AUSTRALIA SOUTH AFRICA NEWFOUNDLAND INDIA PAKISTAN CEYLON FIJI GOLD COAST HONG KONG KENYA MALAYA NIGERIA SIERRA LEONE AND BURMA WHOSE NAMES ARE HERE RECORDED.

Lee-on-the-Solent Fleet Air Arm Memorial: dedicated to those of the RN and RNVR who gave their lives whilst serving in the Fleet Air Arm worldwide. The principal base of the Fleet Air Arm,
Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire, was chosen as the site for the Memorial to the men of that service who died during the Second World War and who have no known grave. To each side of the central memorial stone is a wall bearing three recessed panels of Westmorland slate, on
which are carved almost 2,000 names.The Memorial consists of a rectangular column of Portland stone bearing the inscription:

 LA GRANGE, Antony M. Sub-Lt SANF. Origin. Albertinia, Cape  Province, South Africa. 1772 sqdn., H.M.S. Indefatigable. Died 28 July 1945 (Age 23). Firefly '69886' failed to return from strike on Hirara, Japan, after attack on luggers at low altitude.

WAKE, V.H. Sub-Lt. 68426 SANF. 815 sqdn., Machrihanish, H.M.S. Landrail. Died 28 March 1945. Barracuda ME121 hit water after a bombing attack, Ballure Point, Argyll.
