History


Alexia was a Rapana class auxillary ship converted from a Bulk Tanker and built by Bremer Vulkan. Laid down and launched 20 December 1934, completed April 1935. Taken over for conversion and conversion completed December 1943.

Rapana class conversions were conceived and designed by the shipping company which owned the ships; the plan was initially rejected by the Navy but later accepeted. Generally similar to previous MAC conversions.

Alexia operated in the North Atlantic throughout the war. Returned to merchant service postwar; named Ianthina in 1951. Scrapped at Blyth starting August 1954.
