Operational History and Background

The squadron formed at Bursburgh as a 2-seater fighter squadron with 12 Firefly Is in May 1944, and carried out deck landing training on HMS Empress and subsequently the aircraft were handed to 766 squadron.

The squadron was re-equipped with new aircraft with long-range tanks, embarking on HMS Ruler in January 1945 for the British Pacific Fleet.

The squadron disembarked at Schofields, Australia in March 1945 where it remained till July. That month the squadron again embarked on HMS Indefatigable for strikes against the Japanese mainland, and after VJ-Day was involved in dropping supplies to Prisoner of War (POW) camps in Japan, returning to Australia in September 1945.
