The squadron officially formed at Brunswick in June 1944 as a fighter squadron with 18 Corsair IIIs, embarking in August 1944 on HMS Puncher for the UK, the squadron then joining the 10th Naval Fighter Wing.In December the squadron re-equipped with 24 Corsair IVs and embarked on HMS Slinger for the Far East.
One month was spent at Schofields, Australia, re-embarking on HMS Slinger in March 1945 to join the British Pacific Fleet.
The squadron was disbanded in April 1945 and the crew absorbed into the squadrons of HMS Formidable and HMS Victorious.
In June 1945 the squadron reformed at Archerfield, Australia, and spent part of the month at Maryborough, the squadron then moved to Nowra where it became a spare squadron for the 3rd Carrier Air Group and disbanded after VJ-Day in October 1945.
