Operational History and Background


The squadron officially formed at Brunswick in September 1944 as a fighter squadron with 18 Corsair IVs, embarking in December 1944 on HMS Thane for the UK. The squadron dis-embarked at Belfast, and the following day, 15 January 1945 the ship was badly damaged by a torpedo from the German U-boat U-482 off the Clyde Light Vessel.

In March 1945 the squadron embarked on HMS Venerable with 24 aircraft for India. Having been shore based at Hal Far from March till April the squadron re-embarked on HMS Venerable for Tambaram, where it became part of the 15th Carrier Air Group.
Two days before VJ-Day the squadron re-embarked on HMS Venerable from Schofields and was operational during the occupation of Hong Kong from Kai Tak in September till October 1945.
