Operational History and Background
In April 1944 the squadron was attached to 16 Group RAF Coastal Command at Manston and Thorney Island for duties in the English Channel leading up to D-Day activities at Normandy.
In September 1944 the squadron embarked on HMS Formidable for the Far East, but remained at Dekheila whilst the ship was repaired for 3 months with propellor shaft problems.
In January 1945 the squadron re-embarked on HMS Formidable for the British Pacific Fleet which it joined in April 1945 in the Phillipines via Australia, and soon after taking part in strikes against Sakishima Gunto Island airfields and shore targets, and subsequently was involved in attacks on Formosa.
When the ship’s flight deck was damaged by Kamikaze attacks, the ship withdrew to Australia in early June 1945 and the squadron joined the 2nd Carrier Air Group at Jervis Bay, embarking on HMS Formidable later in the month for strikes in July against the Japanese mainland up till VJ-Day.
