Operational History and Background

In December 1943, the squadron formed at Squantum as a torpedo bomber reconnaissance Avenger squadron, and subsequently embarked on HMS Arbiter in May 1944, disembarking at Machrihanish in June 1944.

In June 1944 a fighter flight of 4 Wildcat Vs was added at Eglington with a short service on HMS Formidable.

The squadron embarked on HMS Tracker in September 1944 for Arctic Russia convoys, disembarking at Machrihanish for Hatston .

In January 1945 the squadron embarked on HMS Queen for operations off Norway, and subsequently undertook further Arctic Russia convoys, finally disbanding in May 1945.
