Operational History and Background

Squadron formed after WW2 in 1951 by renumbering 883 squadron. This Canadian unit became VF-871 when American style numbering was adopted in Nov 1952

Formed as the redesignation of 883 Squadron in May 1951, it was renamed VF 871 under the US system of numbering in November 1952 and continued service until it disbanded in March 1959. Its personnel and aircraft were then amalgamated with VF 870.
