The squadron embarked from Belfast on HMS Dasher in October 1942 to provide fighter patrols in the landings in North Africa.
In January 1943, the squadron re-embarked at Machrihanish, the ship having joined the Home Fleet and sailed that month to Iceland. On a successive trip HMS Battler exploded in the Clyde on 27 March, with the extreme loss of life including a detachment from 891 sqaudron. The squadron was subsequently disbanded April 1943.
In June 1945 the squadron reformed at Eglington with 16 Hellcat II(NF)s, moving to Nutts Corner in August just before VJ-Day. The squadron disbanded in September 1945.
