Operational History and Background

The squadron was officially formed at Norfolk, USA in October 1942 as a fighter squadron with 6 Martlet IVs, subsequently embarking on HMS Victorious in February 1943 to join the US Pacific Fleet.

May 1943 was spent in the Coral Sea carrying out patrols, and in June 1943 supported the landings in the Middle Solomon by the US Marines. Finally the ship returned to the UK in September 1943.

In November 1943 the squadron joined the 7th Naval Fighter Wing with 10 Wildcat Vs, embarking on HMS Searcher for North Atlantic convoy duties in December. 1944.

Successful attack in Operation Tungsten of 3 April 1944 on the Tirpitz in Kaa Fjord, North Norway by 827 and 830 squadron Barracuda dive-bombers from HMS Furious and HMS Victorious and supported by the 7th Naval Fighter Wing including 800, 804, 881, 896, 882, and 898 fighter sqdns

In April 1944, whilst operating from HMS Searcher the squadron provided escort during the operation Tungsten attack on the German battleship Tirpitz in Kaa Fjord, northern Norway. The squadron continued operations off Norway till June 1944, shooting down 4 Bv 138s and 1 Fw 200.

In June 1944 the squadron took part in a Gibraltar convoy, merging with 882 in July 1944 and ceased to exist.

In January 1945 the squadron reformed at Wingfield, Cape Town with 24 Hellcat IIs, and embarked on HMS Attacker for Ceylon in June 1945.

After disembarking at Colombo Racecourse, August was spent at Puttalam and the squadron moved to Katukurunda the day before VJ-Day.
