HMS Vengeance and Lockheed Martin Business Partnership
The Friends of HMS Vengeance to date is all about partnerships and a
major player in the world's industries, Lockheed Martin is being invited
to discuss in joining us in saving the VENGEANCE and hopefully assisting
in the Vengeance Naval Aviation Heritage Museum venture.
Lockheed Martin traces its roots back to the early days of flight. In
1909 aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin created a small airplane construction
business and built it into a major airframe supplier to U.S. military and
commercial customers. In 1913, Allan and Malcolm Loughhead (name later
changed to Lockheed) flew the first Lockheed plane over San Francisco Bay.
The modern Lockheed Corporation was formed in 1932. Wartime aircraft included
the B-26 Marauder medium bomber and
the B-29 heavy bombers, the latter of which dropped the Nuclear bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ending the Pacific conflict. Well known post war
aircraft include the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, F-16 'Fighting Falcon' and
F-117A Stealth Fighter.
Lockheed Martin maintains a close association with Naval aviation including
as contractor for the new Merlin helicopter for the Royal Navy. Lockheed
Martin Space Systems Strategic Missile Programs (SMP), Sunnyvale California,
provides programme management and technical engineering support to the
United Kingdom's TRIDENT II Fleet Ballistic Missile programme including
for the Royal Navy Vanguard class ballistic missile submarine, HMS Vengeance.
Lockheed Martin has more than 300 international partnerships, of which
more than 75 are in the United Kingdom. In its globally inclusive approach
to doing business, Lockheed Martin's goals are to establish and maintain
enduring international partnerships with advanced technology companies
around the world, and be seen as their international partner of choice.
Lockheed Martin’s alliances in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe
are true partnerships with technology, jobs and market access flowing in
both directions.
In the past both Lockheed and Martin produced naval aircraft for the
Royal Navy including the Lockheed HUDSON, Lockheed VENTURA, Martin BALTIMORE
and Martin MARYLAND.
Lockheed Martin continues to promote naval aviation developments in
the UK. Teamed with nine other British companies, Lockheed Martin is prime
contractor and systems integrator for the successful Royal Navy MERLIN
helicopter programme. Lockheed Martin is under contract to provide 44 Merlin
systems to the Royal Navy by 2002. Merlin, which leverages Lockheed Martin’s
systems integration expertise, is the largest UK operation, consisting
of approximately 500 people in Portsmouth. The first production aircraft
came off the production line in May 1997 and the first Royal Navy Squadron
was commissioned on December 1, 1998. Another important milestone was achieved
in March 2000 with the delivery of the 22nd (RN 22) Merlin, the halfway
mark.
In addition, BAE SYSTEMS and Lockheed Martin are partners in the development
of the X-35 Joint
Strike Fighter (JSF), the next-generation multi-role fighter. Variants
of the JSF are being developed for use by the Royal Navy.
