By the time the Fleet Air Arm air station closed in 1996 more than 17 First World War and Inter-War aircraft, 37 Second World War and 29 Post War aircraft types are known to have been stationed at Lee-on-Solent. Even today up to 14 types of aircraft use the airfield, both fixed wing powered aircraft such as the recently arrived police Defender, and the gliders such as the Astir, as well as rotary aircraft such as the Coast Guard Sea King. In addition various restoration projects are under way including a naval Tiger Moth and the two recently arrived Catalinas.
The following pages provide an indepth summary of the various aircraft types which were known to have been stationed at the Fleet Air Arm Air Station 1917-1996, as well as of those aircraft which continue to use the airfield today. The wartime aircraft histories have been written in collaboration with the Fleet Air Arm Archive 1939-1945.
