The 90th anniversarey of the Battle of the Somme, the longest and most costly land battle in British history, was commemorated yestyerday, on 1 July 2006. It was fought from 1 July to 18 November 1916 with 420,000 casualties. The commemoration at Thiepval British memorial was attended by veteran Henry Allingham. Henry served as an RNAS aircraft engineer at the Somme. He travelled to France from his care home at St Dunstan's, Brighton.
