Connections and a joint maritime heritage between Brazil and UK go back
a long way, including the Anglo-Brazilian Treaty of 1845. Examples of maritime
connections include the loss of the British ship Douro in 1982, whereby
the peoples of Southampton and Rio da Janeiro consoled each other over
the loss of the ship. The naval connection has been maintained over the
centuries including with Brazil and the UK fighting together as Allies
in WW2, and as epitomised by the handing over of Vengeance by the Royal
Navy to the Brazilian Government in 1956. Today there are many ties
between the two countries and the following page illustrates just some
of those.

THE LOSS OF THE DOURO
The Mayor of Southamton, Mr. W.H. Davis, has given notice that the relief
fund, which now amounts to about Pounds 1,260, will be finally closed on
the 30th inst., and request that all claimants will send in detailed particulars
of their claims before that date, or they will be excluded from any participation
in the benefit of the fund. The Anglo-Brazilian Times of May 9 announces
that the subscription promoted by Chefe de Divisao Arthur Silveira da Motta,
at Rio de Janeiro, for the widows and children of the lost officers and
crew of the Douro amounts to Pounds 800 or Pounds 900. |
